“Life’s Works” at the Vermont Quilt Festival

Summer is here and it is certainly a different experience in Northern California than it was ever in Santa Fe New Mexico. Soooo much cooler! I love it. I just returned from a great trip showing off my quilts at my exhibition “Life’s Works” at the Vermont Quilt Festival.

I have decided to extend the great discount rates on my quilts for the month of July. So please look at the following price list and let me know if you are interested in any of the works.

Memorial Day Quilts 2017 Katiepm

Time Is Really Going Fast

The first of June already!! time is really going fast this year and I am very busy. Off to teach in Boston next week for Quilters Connection, teaching a two day Artful log cabin and a lecture and a book signing at their show. Then I drive to Greenville to teach a week long workshop on Fractured Landscapes! Haven’t taught that one in a long time but it is making a comeback and I am excited. Then home for a few days then out to the Vermont Quilt Festival where I am having a show of my life work as a quiltmaker. I will hang 45 of my quilts, old to new. If you are in the area please stop by and say hi!! Then a brake and go to my family reunion at Trinity Lake. I always look forward to that.

This past weekend my sisters and I got together to make patriotic quilts for our Veterans.

We give them to vets that we know and also the vets that are affiliated with the wonderful program at College of the Redwoods with Crystal Morse. She is awesome and so caring for their needs and she often feels they need a quilt!! and we handle that for her.

Have a great summer

Just found this great article about paint brushes that I thought I would share   http://wonderstreet.com/blog/choosing-the-best-paintbrush

Zooming Through February

Hard to believe that January is already over and we are zooming through February. Big teaching time for me. So I am zooming as well. Off to teach at the Beach City Quilters in California then home for a few days then a whole week at Asilomar by the Sea in Monterey California, one of my favorite spots for teaching. Such a perfect setting with walks on the beach in the mornings and great classes during the day. and the shopping is great with an on site quilt shop with over 600 bolts of fabrics brought to us by Carolie Hensley from her Cotton Patch Quilt Shop! Then home for just one day then flying to Sitges Spain to have an exhibition and teach a few classes, I love Spain and the Spanish Ladies!! Then home again for a week then an Artful Log Cabin class at the before mentioned Cotton Patch in Lafayette California. Noticing a lot of California classes! Moving back to California has been good for me. I love it here. Then in April I run my Alegre Retreat in Gateway Colorado, go to the web site to learn more about that venue and maybe join us for a really great time. www.alegreretreat.com. Then April ends up with judging then a week of teaching at the big Paducah Quilt show. Then I hope to have a few week brake before I start again. Please check out my itinerary page to see if I will be teaching near you and we could do a class together. until then happy stitching.

Madeline Island School of the Arts Workshop

From Watercolor to Quilt – 5 day workshop

at Madeline Island School of the Arts
August 28 – September 1, 2017

Come join me for a five day quilting workshop retreat at
Madeline Island School of the Arts in stunning Lake Superior!

Imagine – Five full days to focus on your work! Let the friendly MISA staff take care of the details while you invest in yourself! Believe me – this is truly a quilter’s paradise!

In this class, we will begin by creating our own watercolor paintings – don’t worry, no prior painting experience is needed!

We’ll learn many different techniques, and there is plenty of time for experimentation. You will then choose your most dynamic painting to create your own enlarged template and then translate it into a beautiful, abstract quilt using fabrics. When the quilt is done, it will look like a loose, layered, colorful watercolor painting!

Make the most of your week by staying with me on campus!

Your comfortable rooms overlook a peaceful meadow and are located just steps away from the large, light filled studios. These studios are lined with windows, and can easily accommodate an eight-foot table for each student! They also stay open 24/7 and include bottomless cookie jars and unlimited refreshments.

Speaking of the food –

If you stay on campus, your lodging price includes the weekly meal plan! You will be treated to delicious daily breakfast, lunch and two

on-campus dinners. MISA consistently garners high marks from alumni for their amazing meals, and they work very hard to ensure all dietary needs are met (and exceeded!) with a wide variety of artfully prepared meals – you won’t be disappointed!

 Getting there is easy –

Board the car ferry in Bayfield, Wisconsin and in 20 minutes
you’ll slip into “Island Time.”
MISA also provides a convenient roundtrip shuttle service, from the Duluth, Minnesota airport and will bring you directly to your doorstep on campus.

Please consider joining me for an unforgettable
week of creativity and relaxation
August 28 – September 1, 2017!

Thanksgiving and Christmas

One of my favorite times of the year, between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I am generally home for the holidays and I enjoy decorating my house for Christmas, working in my studio and spending time with family.

It is going to be a great December! A few weeks ago Alex and Ricki and crew from TQS stopped by my house for a visit and named me the Legend for 2016! What an honor! You can see that show on TQS (thequiltshow.com). If you are not already a subscriber sign up and share this with me.

TQS The Quilt Show My Episode is Show#1913 and will post on December 18th 2016.
You can view a preview of the trailer on YouTube: https://youtu.be/GOiveT5WsDg

You can view the full episode for FREE starting December 25th January 1st, 2017 at: http://thequiltshow.com/watch/show-list/video/latest/show-1913-tqs-quilting-legend-2016?artist_coupon=19131218

I have done 4 lessons for iquilt and they are now out as DVDs so you could own one yourself if you haven’t downloaded it on iquilt. They are 25 dollars apiece. I had such fun making each and everyone of them and I hope you learn and enjoy watching.

I am taking sign ups for my online courses that I do myself. Color and Composition and Working in a Series that will be starting in January, find out more about them under the pull down tab of Teaching and sign up before we fill up.

As for working in my new studio….. You can see me in my new studio on the TQS show and I will be posting images as I finish up two major pieces this month. One is a very large artful log cabin that I have been working on to demonstrate construction in my classes and I have just a few more blocks and quilting it and it is done. Also working on the fifth in my Graffiti series, this one is in complementary colors of violet and yellow with gray added. It is a very exciting piece to work on. Hopefully I can complete these two by the end of the month because I am planning on the best year next year. I am thinking about a new series based on some very special paintings of mine. That will get the year off to a good start. I am having several exhibitions next year, one in Setges Spain, one at the Vermont Quilt Festival and one in Rome at the end of the year!! So I want to produce some new work and the beginnings of any series are very exciting!! I will be teaching a lot next year so maybe I will be somewhere near you and you can join me for a class and or lecture. Check out my itinerary pull down tab to see where I will be. My most exotic trip next year will be to Taiiwan and China!! I love my life and feel very thankful that I am able to travel and teach and enjoy every minute of it.

I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and that all of your dreams come true!!

Fall Is In The Air

Fall is in the air and that means that my teaching schedule is coming to an end for the year. But still a few more teaching engagements before the Holidays. October I will be teaching my artful log cabins in San Diego coupling up with a trip to go to the Visions opening celebration and to serve on the panel of judges on Sunday the 16th. Then a quick trip home then off to Paducah KY to teach Artful Log Cabins at the museum on the 20 to 22. Then at the end of the month I will be at the Houston Quilt Festival teaching Artful Log Cabins again for two days then Stitched Paintings for 2 days then home for a day then to Art Quilt Tahoe where I will be artist in residence working on a new piece that I am very excited about. Finished for the year!! You can check out more details on these venues on my itinerary on this web site. A couple of months off to enjoy the holidays with family. Thanksgiving is at our house, my husband is a great cook and I am good with prep and cleanup. We will have a new baby to hold which I am really looking forward to, little Hudson my nieces new baby. For Christmas my daughter and her boyfriend are coming to Fortuna to celebrate with us and see our new home and visit the Redwoods for the first time.
I wish happy Holidays to all of you
love and hugs

It Is A Busy Month

It is a busy month for me. I will be teaching in New York for the Manhattan Quilters on the 10th and 11th, a lecture and my artful log cabins class.

Then back near home on the 16th and 17th in Ferndale at Stitch to do a two day Artful log cabin class

Then to Colorado to Woodland Park on the 23rd and 24th for a lecture and another Artful log cabin class, with a hop down to Santa Fe to teach at the quilt shop a new composition class and a one day value class.

I will get to visit with my friends there and check on my house. I would love for my house in Santa Fe to sell so I can be free in California. But it looks like if the buyer is not a quilter they don’t know what to do with my beautiful studio and if the husband doesn’t need a really neat shop……. so if you need either or both check it out 235 Rancho Alegre Rd, Santa Fe. NM

Having a great time in Fortuna California. It has been a beautiful summer filled with family and friends.
