Quilters Hall of Fame

SAQA Celebrates Katie Pasquini Masopust’s Induction into The Quilters Hall of Fame

The Quilters Hall of Fame in Marion, Indiana held their latest celebration July 18-20, 2024, featuring the induction of their newest honoree, Katie Pasquini Masopust.

Since Katie first began quilting in 1978, her creativity and sense of design and color have been a moving force in the contemporary field of quilt making.

Katie joined the SAQA Board in 1999, was SAQA’s 2nd President, and served for 7 years from 2000-2007.

Katie led the Board through a challenging period of growth by expanding our membership (she still holds the record for signing up 77 new members  during a 4 day period at the Houston International Quilt Festival.)

Katie was instrumental in finding new donors, recruiting new sponsors, starting an annual conference, and creating a new website.

Katie was part of the Board that hired our current Executive Director, Martha Sielman.  Martha states, “Katie was one of my quilting heroes, so getting to work with her was a dream come true.”

One of Katie’s greatest strengths is her outgoing nature. For more than 45 years, Katie has traveled the world as a quilt ambassador and an incredibly popular and sold-out teacher for thousands quilters both in person and on-line.

She is dedicated to her craft, inspiring, delightfully exuberant and so entertaining!

Luncheon Honoring Katie Pasquini Masopust

During a luncheon at the Lyric Event Center, Katie provided a lecture presentation that was intimate, engaging, and memorable. It was a delight to see Katie and her family and friends celebrate together with our SAQA and quilting community.

Induction Ceremony for Katie Pasquini Masopust into Quilters Hall of Fame

At the induction ceremony on Saturday evening, Katie received her medal and awards, expressed her gratitude, and delighted the audience with her comments.

Several members from the audience spoke and shared special memories.  This included Quilters Hall of Fame representatives, SAQA Board member, former and current students, friends, and even family.

Katie had a large group of family and friends who traveled with her to celebrate this honor.  She is loved by all. It was so rewarding to hear how she has been such a positive force in so many lives. As her brother said, “You all know what a wonderful quilter Katie is.  I’m here to say she’s an even better person than she is a quilter!”

On behalf of our entire SAQA Board and community we celebrate the incredibly talented artist, Katie Pasquini Masopust.  We are so proud of Katie!

November News

I am so excited about my one woman show at the Morris Graves Museum in Eureka, California. It is a fantastic building, it was formerly the library that my mom took us to when we were kids. Now it is a beautiful art museum. I had a show here 18 years ago and I am so happy to be back showing my latest works and a few oldies- but- goodies. I hope if you are in the area in the next few months so you can stop by and see everything. Opening is Saturday the 3rd of December!

My online classes will start again in January. Color and Composition will start on the 23rd of January and the Working in a Series class will begin on the 26th.

My Zoom class Jumpstarting Your Creativity will start on the 19th and will run for four months on the third Thursday of the month.

I hope you can join me for one of these classes!

My new fabric line with Free Spirit fabrics is shipping in December so I am very excited about that. Please ask for it at your local quilt shops “Cool Breeze”.

I hope that everyone has wonderful holidays filled with family and friends and much joy.

February News

Hi from Katie Pasquini Masopust!

It is the start of a brand new year and I can’t tell yet if it will be a repeat of the last two years or if things are starting to change. I will be doing some teaching so that makes me happy. The first good thing that happened in 2022 is that my new line of fabric with Free Spirit got shipped!! I am having so much fun playing with the fabrics. Here are a few quilts that I made with “DANCE MOVES”. The larger quilt is made from a pattern for the squared quilt by Sam Hunter of Hunter’s Design Studio. A fun pattern with fun fabrics!! The little still life quilts are made from lesson 4 of my Jumpstarting Your Creativity Zoom class. More about that class below.

For two weeks I will be at Asilomar teaching my From Watercolor to Quilt class the 27th of February to the 4th of March Empty Spools Seminar. Then home for for two weeks then back to teach Jumpstarting Your Creativity from the 20th to 25th of March at Asilomar Empty Spools Seminar. Then a quick turnaround of just 5 days, then to teach at my Alegre Retreat in Gateway Colorado. In May I will be teaching Working in a Series for MISA, Madeline Island School of the Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This class is a great class for exploring your own direction through two or three quilts. I have lots of ideas to move you from your original inspiration to the next in your series and on. Lots of fun and we can play with any technique, composition and color. So wide open but with structure to help keep you focused.

So join me for some fun in person in the classroom. Email me at katiepm505@gmail.com if you have any questions or interests.

Virtual Zoom-Based Class
Jumpstarting Your Creativity

Starting February 26, 4 PM Pacific Time 4 Sessions: February 26, March 26, April 23, May 28
If you aren’t comfortable doing in-person classes I have a new Jumpstarting Your Creativity class starting February 26th at 4 PM Pacific Time. This is an informative and fun class that you can do from the comfort of your own workspace! Click here to sign up!
Learn the basics of good design and explore exercises to unleash the creative process. Bring out your inner artist and learn to apply the principles to making art quilts.

There are four different lessons, one each month. We will work in a 12-inch square format. These exercises can then be the inspiration for a larger piece. Composition with line and shape will be explored as well as addressing negative space, soft and hard edges, abstraction of realistic inspirations, grid work, still life, etc. I will be demonstrating my ideas for you to watch, then you can try out my ideas or some of your own on your own after the Zoom meeting.

The two other online classes that I do, Color and Composition (an 8-lesson workshop) and Working in a Series (a 6-piece series workshop) will be starting up again in June. Let me know if you want to be put on the list for a reminder when those classes will be ready for registration.

I hope everyone is coping with this crazy world we all live in and that soon we will all be comfortable meeting again for quilting events. I know that this pandemic has offered me really intense time in my studio and I am thankful for that, not much else, but thankful for that. Keep creating.

love and hugs, katiepm
